How to use the Debt X-Ray & Payoff Planner

  1. List each debt: credit card, personal loan, EMIs, BNPL, a family loan or anything else. Start from the three examples and change them.
  2. Enter the balance, the yearly interest rate from your statement, and the monthly payment. For a card, enter the minimum due as a % of the balance.
  3. Read your Debt X-Ray: total owed, monthly interest, and which debt costs you the most.
  4. Choose an extra amount you can pay each month, on top of minimums.
  5. Compare Avalanche, Snowball and Minimums only. Then save your plan as a PDF or keep it on this device. Nothing is uploaded.

Worked example

Kavita owes โ‚น80,000 on a credit card at 36% a year. She also has a โ‚น2 lakh loan at 14% (EMI โ‚น6,800). Her BNPL dues are โ‚น15,000, paid โ‚น5,000 a month. These are example rates.

Her debts cost about โ‚น4,733 in interest this month. The card alone is โ‚น2,400, about half of it.

Paying only minimums, she would be debt-free in about 14 years and pay about โ‚น1,54,633 in interest.

She adds โ‚น3,000 extra, so she pays โ‚น18,920 every month. With Avalanche, she is debt-free in 18 months. Interest falls to about โ‚น42,032, a saving of about โ‚น1,12,601.

Snowball also takes 18 months here and costs only about โ‚น322 more. It clears her first debt a month sooner.

Avalanche vs snowball: which one suits you?

Both plans pay the same total every month. When one debt is cleared, its payment rolls into the next.

Avalanche puts extra money on the highest interest rate first. It usually saves the most money.

Snowball clears the smallest balance first. Each quick win can keep you going.

The best plan is the one you will stick to. If the gap is small, pick the one that feels better.

If you can’t pay your minimums

This happens to many people, often after a job loss or illness. It is not a personal failure.

  • Talk to your lender early, before you miss a payment. Ask what options they have.
  • Pause new spending on your costliest debt so the balance stops refilling.
  • Cover essentials first: food, rent, school fees and medicines.
  • Never borrow from unverified apps or unknown lenders to repay old debts. Check any lender on the Reserve Bank of India’s official website.
  • Build a small cushion with the Emergency Fund Calculator.

Questions people ask

Should I list a loan from family?

Yes. Set the interest to 0 and the payment to 0 if there is no fixed repayment. It gets cleared from extra payments in your plan.

Why is my real statement a little different?

The planner estimates interest as the yearly rate divided by 12. Fees, taxes, billing dates and rate changes can change real figures.

Is it safe to enter my debts?

Yes. Everything is worked out in your browser. Your debts are saved only on your device, and only if you tick the box.
